On Tuesday, Cam Ward officially became the second commitment for Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans' 2025 recruiting class. Ward will join Jordan Scott from South Lakes High School in Virginia, forming a formidable duo for the Spartans. Standing at 6'7", Ward is a versatile forward from Largo, Maryland, known for his relentless energy and ability to dominate on the court.
As a junior, Ward led Largo High School to a Class 2A Maryland State Championship, putting up an impressive stat line in the title game: 29 points, 16 rebounds, six blocks, and five steals. His exceptional motor skills define his game, making him a high-impact player even without the ball in his hands. Ward excels as a rebounder, using his impeccable timing and court awareness to track the ball off the rim.
Offensively, Ward is a mismatch nightmare—too strong for smaller defenders and too quick for big men. His post-game is polished, and even when playing with his back to the basket, he's always looking to make the right play, whether scoring or creating opportunities for his teammates.
This past summer, Ward played for Team Durant in the EYBL, where he focused on attacking the rim and was highly productive despite not shooting much from long range. In Coach Izzo's system, Ward will be essential to jumpstarting the offense by inbounding the ball and trailing in transition, forcing defenses to stay on high alert. As he gains more trust, Ward will also be tasked with grabbing defensive rebounds and igniting fast breaks on his own.
Ward fits the mold of past Michigan State standouts like Delvon Roe, Draymond Green, and Branden Dawson. This is a major recruiting win for the Spartans, who prioritized Ward from the start. He chose MSU over offers from Kansas State, Maryland, and Virginia.
